In partnership with Missoula Public Health, we offer household chemical collection, reuse, and disposal options for Missoula. Formerly known as the once-per-year as HazWaste Days, this appointment, fee based program gives our community year-round disposal options for unneeded household chemicals, typically known as household hazardous waste, and keep them out of Missoula’s groundwater and landfill.
Household chemical drop-off registration.
Before you sign up, here are a few things to know:
This program is for household materials only—we’re not able to accept waste from businesses or schools. Drop-offs are also limited to 10 gallons per visit.
To save you time, take a quick look at our Accepted Materials Guide before scheduling.
You’ll also want to review our guide for proper preparation and transportation so everything arrives safely. The registration fee is $20 and is non-refundable. If this fee is a barrier, please contact us at hcd@homeresource.org before filling out this form—we’re happy to work with you.
Still unsure about an item? Reach out using our inquiry form before booking—we’re here to help!
Appointments are required prior to drop-off and will be available on the following days, with registration available up to 30 days before:
Mondays starting in April between 11 AM – 4 PM
Same-day appointments are not guaranteed to be available.
What is Household Hazardous Waste?
Some everyday products around your home can be dangerous to you and the environment if they’re thrown away like regular trash. Items like oil-based paint, aerosol cans, cleaning products, and weed killers can catch fire, leak, or harm people, pets, and our water.
We call these items household hazardous waste, and they need a little extra care when it’s time to get rid of them.
Common household waste includes:
- Flammables, combustibles & solvents: *We accept propane canisters*
- Automotive Fluids (gas, diesel fluid, brake fluid, etc.)
- Oil-based wood stains, mineral spirits, etc.
*We do not accept new or used oil* - Pesticides and Herbicides
- Products with mercury (thermometers, thermostats & fluorescent lights)
- Acids – muriatic acid for pools and fish tanks
- Strong cleaners or drain openers (like lye/sodium hydroxide)
Reduce first
You can reduce household hazardous waste by buying only what you need for the job and choosing less hazardous alternatives whenever possible.
And before you buy new, check out the paint room at Home ReSource — you might find exactly what you need!
We can’t take it all!
We wish we could take everything, but there are a few limits. Space at our facility is tight; some items already have other disposal options, and safely handling and transporting these materials is expensive.
