January Lunch & Learn Recap: What to Do with E-Waste

“Watt” an amazing Lunch & Learn to kick off 2026! Home ReSource’s Keilin teamed up with Dan Hubing, who leads Linux workshops at the Missoula Public Library and is the Windows User Group’s friendly facilitator. The topic? What to do with e-waste!

Hubing kicked off the Lunch & Learn with information on using a program called Linux to save old electronics from the landfill. Linux is a free, open-source operating system (OS) and kernel, known for being stable, secure, and flexible, powering everything from smartphones (Android) and web servers to the world’s most powerful supercomputers and IoT devices. Even if your computer or laptop is on its last legs, installing the Linux program can bring it back to life and make it usable again. Hubing walked attendees through the steps to installing the program and answered several questions. The Missoula Public Library offers free Linux User Groups (led by Hubing), and he recommended checking that out. The next one will be January 31, 2026, from 1 PM-3 PM.

You can find the information sheet from Hubing here: Lunch and Learn Seminar Handout

Keilin finished up the presentation with some different paths e-waste could go:

  • Repairing electronics
  • Donating electronics that are still usable
  • Repurpose old electronics e.g. jewelry!
  • Recycling if an electronic has truly lived out its full life

Here are the slides from Keilin’s presentation.

At the end, there was a lively discussion on e-waste in general and a lot of interest in Dan’s Linux User Group. We hope that this Lunch & Learn provided useful information on what to do with e-waste. Do you have any other ideas on what to do with old electronics? Comment below! Thank you MCAT for filming and to Bridge Pizza for providing the lunch!
