October Lunch & Learn Recap: Workshop & Fix-it Clinic Expo

This month’s Lunch & Learn was a workshop and fix-it clinic extravaganza! The Workshops Coordinator, J Reilly, presented on the different workshops that are available in Home ReSource’s woodshop, as well as Fix-It clinics that are offered throughout the year. The presentation and expo included a tour of the woodshop and time afterwards to ask questions.

One of the most interesting aspects of the presentation was the revamp work that was being done. J explained that revamp work is when “materials are received and then reworked into something that can be resold at the store.” This includes items such as smart canvases (made out of old doors) and bird houses (made from donated wood). Paul Hill, ReUse Specialist and Revamp Guru, stopped by for a little bit to talk about his current revamp work with sink faucets.

How are workshops chosen?

Someone asked how J decided what to build at the different workshops and he said it depends on several different things:

  • repeats of workshops that were successful in the past
  • workshops that seem fun or will provide useful woodworking skills
  • feedback from participants

Where do you source the materials for workshops?

Another person asked where all the wood comes from for the workshops. J said that he’ll look around the Home ReSource yard to see what’s come in. He noted that he’ll look specifically for cedar or other hardwood, which makes for better material. He also said that the wood is disposed of in a more sustainable way, whether that’s composting it or using it as firewood.
