SponCon 2017 (aka SponCon the 13th) was on Saturday, September 16th, 2017.
Designed to inspire a culture of reuse with a free, engaging community activity, Spontaneous Construction, or “SponCon” for short, has become an annual Missoula tradition. Contest participants have seven hours to use their choice of Home ReSource materials to build the most beautiful, functional, and creative pieces they can dream up.
We provide a variety of enjoyable, inventive reuse activities, music, and access to local food vendors for contestants and spectators alike. The event draws teams of artists, DIYers, and builders to create works of art and utility, as well as approximately 500 onlookers just there for the fun. After the judges announce winners, some pieces are auctioned on site, and top-judged creations go to the Benefit Auction.
We are currently planning SponCon 2018. If you are interested in providing a kids’ activity station, please contact Jeremy [firstname.lastname@example.org]. Stay tuned for the live line-up announcement!
In the meantime, check out how awesome SponCon 2017 was…

SPONCON 2017 MUSIC:
DJ Mermaid – A wax aficionado, spins a fun upbeat groovy set, blending genres to get those hips shaking.
Red Onion Purple – The instrumentation of Red Onion Purple is guitar, cello, and voice. We often collaborate with other musicians. Our music is a mixture of jazz standards, modern covers, and originals. It is accessible yet peculiar, pretty, improvisatory, at times up beat, occasionally silly, with subject matter ranging from light hearted to melancholy.
Cello Mafia – The Cello Mafia is a multi-age and multi-level cello ensemble that plays pop music.
Montana Suzuki Institute violinists – Ensemble pieces interspersed with solo features displays some of Missoula’s budding musical talent
Found Sound Explosion – anyone who wishes can bang and clang on a variety of unique instruments constructed at Home ReSource for 30 minutes of joyful noise. No clang/bang experience necessary!
Wailing Aaron Jennings & Friends – Aaron Jennings plays an eclectic mix of Honky Tonk, Western swing, and Hillbilly Yodeling. A rotating cast of musicians, and a exciting blend of original songs and warped standards will be sure to get you dancing in the street!
Pale People – A balding neurotic, a disabled music-school dropout, and a diabetic martial artist: Pale People is Missoula, MT’s answer to the question, “How loud can piano rock get?” You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll be vaguely uneasy forever. Listening to Pale People is cheaper than therapy.
Mendelssohn – Mendelssohn is an indie rock band from Missoula, MT. They blend an exhilarating mix of folk-rock and ‘70s-era power pop with layered guitar and vocal harmonies. Members: Jon Filkins (bass, vocals), Sarah Marker (vocals, keys, trumpet), Jake Whitecar (guitar), Pete Puczkowskyj (guitar), Dan Weiss (drums)
