SponCon is the nittiest, grittiest, smashin-est, bashin-est, clangin-est, bangin-est, creativist, barbaloot savin-est party in town!
The 19th annual Spontaneous Construction (SponCon), reuse materials building competition and festival of reuse, is on Saturday, September 16 at Home ReSource (1515 Wyoming St. Missoula).
During SponCon, nearly 20 teams made up of DIYers, builders, artists, tinkerers, professionals, and doers will be competing against time to build the most creative and functional piece they can dream up, in only seven hours – using only reused building materials found in the Home ReSource ReUse Store on site. Information to register a team to compete can be found below.
All items built during the competition will be judged by local community members and awarded prizes at the conclusion of the day. The items will be displayed at the Missoula Public Library with a First Friday showing on Friday, October 6th, from 5 – 7 pm. On Friday, October 13th, items will be sold during a live and silent auction at Home ReSource’s annual banquet & benefit auction at the Commercial Building on Missoula Fairgrounds. Surrounding the building competition and throughout the Home ReSource campus is a community festival of creative reuse open to all in our community! Partner organizations and fellow sustainability leaders in Missoula will lead free family-friendly reuse DIY projects invigorating the sense of creativity with hands-on building. From solar ovens, reuse pet toys, and garden rain barrels – these DIY projects will build skills and creativity! Organizations leading activities include; Families First, Animal Wonders, National Wildlife Federation, YMCA Guts! and the Girl Scouts of Montana.
Live music will fill the air during the day as local musicians play throughout the festival! Food, ice cream by Dreamy’s soft serve, and beer by Bayern Brewing will be available for purchase throughout the day.

TEAM INFORMATION
Compete in the 7-hour building competition!
Teams have 7 hours to build the most masterful, functional, creative piece they can dream of, using only materials found at Home ReSource. Teams can be made up of 1 – 5 folks, are provided space to build, access to power, and use of the welding and cutting stations. All participants receive a commemorative SponCon t-shirt, breakfast treats & coffee, and a drink ticket.

$50 per team (5 people MAX)

What happens next? Most items will be displayed at the Missoula Public Library until the auction and featured during the October 6 First Friday art showing. (Items too big or unstable may not be transported).
The Grand Prize winner will be announced at the Home ReSource banquet & benefit auction on Friday, October 13, 2023. Teams that move on to the grand prize round will receive one free ticket to attend the auction.
